Oppo A78 features a 6.56-inch LCD screen with HD+ resolution (720p), 90 Hz refresh rate, and 600 nits peak brightness. Let’s be honest; we’ve been spoilt with a higher refresh rate and now our eyes refuse to acknowledge anything below 90 Hz. Good thing Oppo A78 5G comes with 90 Hz refresh rate but it would have been better if Oppo stretched it to 120 Hz, considering the phone doesn’t have an AMOLED display.
The screen produces decent colours and the viewing angles are good. The white balance is on the cooler side, but you can switch the screen colour temperature towards warm to get the natural tone. However, the peak brightness is a bit low for comfort, especially outdoors on a sunny day. Oppo says the phone comes with “AI Eye Comfort for all-day entertainment”, but I failed to notice anything different.
Design and build quality
Oppo A78 5G features two enormous rings at the back in a vertical line. The first ring carries the 50 MP primary camera sensor and the other carries a small 2 MP depth sensor and an LED flash. The rings are excessively large, way beyond the actual size of the camera sensor. The enormous rings around the camera sensor are clearly a design choice and while I usually detest such patterns, I must say this phone manages to make it look good
Oppo sent us the Glowing Blue colour variant of the A78 smartphone for review. The polycarbonate back looks like frosted glass, which is working pretty great for this phone’s aesthetics. There is a vertical glossy finish just below the camera array which makes the phone stand out a bit more. The phone gets full marks for this design choice. It is neither too flashy nor bland; just the perfect balance.
Camera
The Oppo A78 5G features a 50 MP primary camera sensor at the back with f/1.8 aperture, paired with a 2 MP depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture. Oppo has not revealed the names of the camera sensors and there is no information about their pixel size as well.
Now coming to the camera performance, the phone clicks decent pictures with ample details, but the colour reproduction is inconsistent. Sometimes, you get good results with AI turned on, while other times you need to turn it off to get decent results. The HDR mode is unreliable. While it brings out highlights, it completely messes up the shadows. Also, it needs you to be extremely still to click pictures.
Performance
The Oppo A78 5G features a 7 nm MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor paired with 8 GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128 GB UFS 2.2 storage. The Dimensity 700 is capable of delivering smooth performance. Apps open in a snap and the smartphone continues to run without lag or stutters even when dozens of apps keep running in the background.
This device is also able to keep the apps running in the background without any trouble. Even with more than 20 apps running in the background, the Oppo A78 5G did not kill them without my permission. This is the first phone I used which seems to be utilising the virtual RAM pretty well. The side-mounted fingerprint sensor is also fast and reliable.
Battery
Oppo A78 5G comes with a 5,000 mAh battery and 33 W SuperVOOC fast charging. The battery backup of this phone is impressive and can help you enjoy a lazy Sunday, streaming content on the phone non-stop.
The battery lasts more than a day even when used excessively. On a 5G network, five hours of non-stop content streaming only drains 50 per cent of the battery. By this estimate, it is safe to assume that the smartphone can stream videos for 9-10 hours straight.
